Editorial Controls

This document describes how content in the aNewsReel app is sourced, produced, reviewed, corrected and removed.

1. What the product is

aNewsReel is a free, advertising-funded mobile app (iOS and Android, with a web build) and companion website that present short news summaries of around 60 words, background "catch-up" articles and a calendar of world events. It does not carry user-generated content, comments or forums. Readers cannot publish anything; the only reader-submitted material is private reports and suggestions sent to us.

2. Text sources and licensing

3. How text content is produced

Summaries and catch-up articles are generated from the licensed source articles by a controlled pipeline using large language models (OpenAI and Anthropic). The models are instructed to summarise only the supplied source text, not to add facts, and to preserve the source's attribution.

Before publication each summary is checked against the original article for fidelity, and is reviewed either by a person or by a second, independent language model acting as a judge. Each published item carries the source name, a link to the full source article, and a label that the summary was created with AI.

4. Images

Images come from three sources, each with its own control:

5. Reader reporting

Every story and catch-up has an in-app "Report" route. The reader selects a category (offensive, needs correction, needs deletion, other), adds details and optional screenshots, may flag the report as urgent, and may leave an email address. Reports are stored in a secured Firestore collection and reviewed by the Director as soon as possible. Reports flagged as urgent will be marked to reviewed and responded to within 24 hrs.

6. Corrections and clarifications

Corrections issued by the news supplier are monitored by the pipeline more frequently than the daily publishing cycle. Where a summary or event entry is found to be inaccurate, it is corrected or withdrawn and a dated entry is published on the app's Corrections & Clarifications screen, visible to every user. Corrections are published as routine editorial practice and without admission of legal liability.

7. Takedown and kill procedure

Target: any item subject to a legal notice, supplier kill or credible complaint is removed within 12 hours, and sooner where practicable. This applies equally to text and images.

8. Legal notices and complaints

Any written demand for correction, retraction or removal, or any threat of a claim, is logged with date, sender and content reference, acknowledged, escalated to the Director the same day, and notified to our insurance broker promptly in line with our policy's claims conditions. We do not admit liability or offer settlement without the insurer's agreement. The Director is the single point of accountability for editorial decisions.

9. Data and access controls

The app requires no sign-in. Optional accounts hold only a name and email address, deletable by the user in-app. Firestore security rules deny enumeration of user data, reader reports and suggestions; write access to published content is restricted to the publishing pipeline and authorised editorial staff. Firebase App Check guards against unattested clients. End-user terms state that content is for personal use, may not be redistributed, and is provided without warranty of accuracy.
